Data update - pilot projects for administrative and other data in the RDCs

Statistics Canada and the CRDCN have been working together to bring new types of data into the RDCs. They are first introduced into the RDCs on a pilot basis, in order to a) establish the procedures to ensure data confidentiality and b) develop the documentation researchers need to properly analyse these data. Some exciting projects aiming to make various types of administrative data accessible to researchers are among the current pilots. More...

Workshop on Statistical Modelling of Complex Hierarchical Data at CRISP RDC

Registration is now open for a three-day statistical modelling (including HLM) workshop to be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, May 28-30, 2009.

Run by Dr. J. Douglas Willms, this course aims to familiarize participants with analytic techniques appropriate for analyses of hierarchically structured data, such as data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY).

Health over the Life Course - call for papers for our 7th annual conference

The University of Western Ontario RDC is hosting our 7th annual conference on the theme: Health over the Life Course, on October 15 and 16, 2009 in London, Ontario.

The theme covers both lifecourse analyses of factors affecting health and analyses of health issues at given developmental stages. Researchers are invited to submit proposals by 8 May 2009.

Socio-economic Conference 2009 - submit a proposal

The call for papers is out for Statistics Canada's 2009 Socio-economic Conference (May 4-5) - deadline January 12th 2009.

These annual conferences give RDC users the opportunity to disseminate research findings within Ottawa's policy community while forging closer links with Statistics Canada analysts and methodologists.

Caring for the care-givers

Men with dementia are in poorer health than women with dementia, yet their caregivers – usually their wives – get fewer home services than those who care for women with dementia, according to a recent analysis of CCHS data by Dorothy Forbes and colleagues at the University of Western Ontario's School of Nursing.

Family caregivers, especially wives, are particularly vulnerable to poor health. Providing good home care services will avoid the more costly alternative of premature institutionalization.
