The family gap in Canada: new study available

In a recent report published by the Cirano, Marie Connolly, Marie Mélanie Fontaine and Catherine Haeck examine the earning differentials between parents and individuals with no children in Canada using confidential microdata from the General Social Survey and the Longitudinal and International Study of Adults. Their analysis confirms that mothers earn less than women with no children but also shows that the “family gap” is generally lower for Quebec mothers than other Canadian mothers, and greater for mothers with less education and for single mothers. On the contrary, fathers enjoy a family bonus: their mean earnings is higher than that of men with no children. The study (in French) is available here.
