International Migrant Day

Today, one Canadian out of five is foreign-born. The selection and the integration of these new comers is one of the key issue for the future of the country, and many researchers have examined these questions and still do. As an example among many others, Chunling Fu et Ross Hickey’s research indicates that the introduction of occupational regulation increases the participation of immigrants in these occupations. Also of interest, Ted McDonald’s webinar comparing the process of immigrant selection and occupational outcomes of International Medical Graduates in the US and Canada. Retirement and pension issues

As Canadian Finance Ministers are meeting at Meech Lake to discuss the future of public pension plans, you may want to consult one of the several studies using RDC data to examine retirement and pension in Canada and that help better understand the stakes.

New datasets available in the RDCs

The data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) 2011, which allows to better understand the economic well-being of Canadians through shifts that individuals and families live through, including changes in factors such as paid work, family make-up and receipt of government transfers, and the data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) a multi-cycle international programme assessing the skills and competencies of adults in several countries, including Canada, are now available in the RDCs.

Fellowships Opportunities

The Université de Montréal Public Health Research Institute (IRSPUM: Institut de recherche en santé publique de l’Université de Montréa) is offering doctoral ($20,000 for one year) and post-doctoral fellowships ($30,000 for two years). Mental distress among the military

To know more about this question, we invite you to read the first edition of our Research Highlight series summarizing research findings regarding the role of various factors on adverse mental health outcomes in the military. Based on the Canadian Community Health Survey - Canadian Forces Supplement, the study confirms that multiple traumatic experiences increase the risk of mental disorders, while perceived social support decreases it. Read on.

International Day of Persons with Disability

On the International Day of Persons with Disability proclaimed by the UN to support their integration in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life, we wish to highlight that numerous studies examining the situation of persons with disability have been done through the CRDCN, notably to better understand employment-related issues. A recent CRDCN Research Highlight also addresses this question.
