Research Statistician Position: CDC - NIOSH

The Social Science and Translation Research Branch (SSTRB), Division of Science Integration (DSI), of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), designs programs to deliver NIOSH research findings and recommendations, evaluates their effectiveness to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses, and promotes translation research across the Institute. SSTRB is currently seeking to identify candidates for a potential position as a Research Statistician. The successful candidate will assist SSTRB scientists to evaluate study data collection, quality control, and/or data utilization methods and perform data processing, cleaning, maintenance, and archiving. The candidate will also serve as a technical expert on statistical interpretation relating to psychometric analysis, multi-level modeling, and/or causal inference of social and behavioral science interventions to advance worker safety, health and well-being. Significant experience to conduct statistical analysis using social and behavioral science methodologies and measures pertinent to the assessment and summarization of health-related data is required.

Successful candidates will possess the following:

• A Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in statistics, biostatistics, or other behavioral or social science field (such as education or psychology), with a strong focus on quantitative, analytic and statistical methods for social and behavioral science research;

• Demonstrated skills and experience in quantitative research methods for the social and behavioral sciences, with strong data management and analytical skills.

• Demonstrated expertise with statistical software packages including SPSS, Mplus, SAS, and R.

• Strong written and oral communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in teams.

• Excellent research, organizational and project management skills.

A primary responsibility of NIOSH/DSI is to provide workers, employers, OSH professionals, and the public with guidance and information to prevent occupational fatalities, diseases and injuries. SSTRB supports a staff of multidisciplinary scientists (including organizational psychologists, social and behavioral scientists, epidemiologists, and health communicators) who work in teams to address pressing research questions across a wide spectrum of priority OSH sectors and health issues. Current priorities include populations that suffer a disproportionate burden of workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities (e.g., young, new and aging workers, immigrant workers, and workers engaged in small and micro businesses), as well as a broad range of topics in work organization, such as long work hours and fatigue, safety climate, work-family conflict, and job stress.
