CSLP (Canada Student Loan Program)

Description

This dataset provides recipient-level longitudinal information by loan year (August 1 to July 31) for the period of 2003-2004 to 2015-2016. It provides three files which track recipients through all phases of the loan or grant lifecycle:
  • The Needs file provides data on the loan and grant application process of each person during a loan year.
  • The Disbursements file covers loan and grant disbursements for each person and loan year.
  • The Repayment file provides data on the repayment and repayment assistance status of each person.
The CSLP data can be linked to the Post-secondary Information System (PSIS) records, up to 2009. Access is granted separately to CSLP and PSIS as specified by the MRC. Researchers must request access to each separate data product. The CSLP is part of Statistics Canada’s Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform (ELMLP).

About the Canada Student Loan Program (CSLP).
The CSLP provides non-repayable and repayable student financial assistance (grants and loans) to eligible students to help them access and afford post-secondary education. The Program also offers repayment assistance to borrowers who have difficulty repaying their student loans. All provinces and territories participate in CSLP, except Quebec, Northwest Territories and Nunavut who receive alternative payments from the Government of Canada to administer their own student financial aid. The provinces and territories provide their own student financial aids in addition to those offered by the federal government through CSLP. The CSLP data in the Research Data Centres (RDC) only reflects the federal student financial aid.
