Correspondance Analysis and Related Methods



Correspondence analysis (CA) is a method that leads to a visualization of the data in the form of a spatial map, where points in the map represent individuals (or other sampling units), groups of individuals, response categories and/or variables. This type of graphical representation facilitates the understanding and interpretation of large complex data sets and is an essential first step in data analysis before proceeding to more formal statistical modelling. CA has proved to be the most versatile of the family of multidimensional scaling techniques because of its flexibility in handling different data types and the natural way it incorporates various weighting systems in the analysis.

This one-week workshop, presented by Michael Greenacre, Professor of Statistics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona Spain, provides a comprehensive introduction to the technique as well as recent developments in its application, especially in the area of multiple correspondence analysis. The emphasis will be on concepts underlying the technique and how to use it in practice therefore many examples will be discussed, mainly in social science and marketing research but also treating some applications in environmental science. In the practical sessions every afternoon, participants will have an opportunity to work on assigned problems and their own data, under the instructors’ supervision. Participants are encouraged to bring their data sets to the workshop. The R program (www.r] will be used in the practical sessions, which are conducted by Oleg Nenadi (Gottingen University, Gottingen Germany). The CA package in R, written by Oleg Nenadi. and Michael Greenacre will be used extensively in the workshop.
