The Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Linkage Platform

We are pleased to inform researchers that, as announced in the recent federal budget, a longitudinal platform linking education and labour market data is currently being developed with resources from Employment and Social Development Canada. This secure data platform will help to better track and make available important labour market information. All datasets and linkage keys prepared for the platform will be made available to researchers through the RDCs across Canada. For now, the Governance Committee supervising the implementation of the platform invites feedback from researchers as to what information they would like to get from this platform. Please contact Grant Gibson to share your recommendations.

New Statistic Act

On December 13, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, welcomed Royal Assent of a bill that reinforces Statistics Canada’s independence through legislative amendments to the Statistics Act. Among other targeted amendments, the new Act enables the appointment of the Chief Statistician by the Governor in Council to a renewable term of not more than five years — the Chief Statistician may only be removed for cause — and creates the Canadian Statistics Advisory Council to advise the Minister and Chief Statistician on the overall quality of the national statistics system and publish an annual report.
